Stuff we have in the Costume Basement that the new costumer can come and play with:

Pool Noodle Storage DVC Costume Studio

Our main sewing machines are all vintage mechanical tabletop Berninas that work (no industrials), we also have 20 Bernette B05 Academy machines for sending home with costume students in the Spring Intro to Costume Design class, that are usable in Fall if you can lure in free minions to help.

I’m sticking around to teach Drama 112 Stage Makeup in Fall, and I’m still doing Archive volunteer work till the 75th Anniversary (of both DVC and the Drama program) in 2025, which is as well as the 50th anniversary of the PAC which occurs at the same time. (The PAC was opened in 1975 on the 25th anniversary of DVC). So I can help any newbie get up to speed (and find where all the stock items you need are located).

Saoirse

There is a paid 10 hr a week student assistant (if you want to continue this) who knows a bunch, who is already researching and applying for designing the student show (“Radium Girls”) in the Arena (little theatre in the round) in early December. So one less headache in finding one. One can usually also hire another 10 hr PT student minion. Work study minions beyond this 20 hr total Drama Dept. budget limit can be hired just by filing the paperwork if you can find any work-study qualified students, because none of the cost comes from the Dept.

First show of the year is “All Shook Up” (musical comedy with Elvis songs in late October on the PAC Mainstage) which appears to be vaguely based in a fictional small American town in any date(s) between 1950s to now. Musical comedy type colorful clothing 1950-now has been a center of my hoarding strategy for over a decade so 98% of this show is likely to be found in our stock and you only need to create stuff you actually want to. We even own a pair of bright blue suede shoes!

Spring will bring “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead” to the PAC Mainstage. Our 16th Century stock is limited, but adequate, and we have long had a mutual lending agreement with Pink Depford Costume/Center Rep that can help both parties build only what you actually want to build.

The last show of the year is currently listed as a “surprise” in negotiation with the playwright. One of our directing/acting professors has a good relationship with two popular living American playwrights, and so can sometimes get us a rather new work before other colleges get to do it. This will also be in the little “Arena” theatre in the round which is a fun space to work in.

You can see LOTS of images of DVC shows at the DVC Drama Archive if you want to know the nearly full history of what DVC drama has been doing 1950-now.

Definitions:

Rendering: Drawing of a plan (architecture, costume, machine, etc) for an object to be made or altered.

Makeup rendering- drawing of a makeup design one intends to execute

Draw a color makeup rendering on one of your personalized face outline sheets, a generic outline sheet,Links to an external site. or freehand, or using computer software of your planned Happy or Upbeat Aged Character Makeup Design .  You may base your upbeat aged character on a character from a play, or novel, or a real person.  Any character is fine so long as they use elements of one or more upbeat emotions like happiness, serenity, love, surprise, wisdom, in the design.  It is OK to alter or even abandon your design if you find there are problems once you try it on your face, but still do a rendering. Bring your rendering to class and also bring it out with you to the hall for your photoshoot with Tara.

If you end up doing this makeup at home for some reason, please photograph your rendering (preferably one shot alone, and one shown alongside your finished face makeup as seen above). POST those photos here to get credit for your rendering.

If you did any research also save and post that here.

STAGE MAKEUP CLASS PAGES 23: Another Optional Extra Credit Assignment: Make Your Alien Replicant Twins for 10 extra points!

[This page is part of a mirror of my Canvas learning system pages I created for my Drama 112 Intro Stage Makeup class at DVC.  If you want to use this content for another Canvas class shell you can find it in Canvas Commons by searching for “Tara Maginnis” and you can download all or part of this directly into your shell with all the extra cool formatting of colored divider lines, right side embedded Giphy animations, etc. already put in, if you are working with a different system, it is ok to copy and paste from here, and then customize the pages as you need  for your classes].

The Master Plan For World Domination:

For this project you will again use a phone app to do something that is both useful and very silly looking.  You will take your photo straight on (no tilting or you will look more “Space Alien” than you intend) on your smart phone, and process it in MirrorPhoto  (or another photo mirror type app) then manipulate it in the app to make two new “Alien Replicant” versions of your face with the two right sides repeated on one, and the two left sides on another:

Tara Face with 2 Right Sides
Tara face straight on
Tara's face with two left sides

As you can see this makes slight asymmetries in your face easier to see.  When we do “Corrective” makeup it will let you see which areas you may wish to try to even out.

Step 1:

If you use an iPhone, download the free MirrorPhoto App.

NOTE: If you are on Android or another system, just go to your system app store and check out a few of the hundreds of available free “photo mirror” apps that are out there, till you find one that lets you do what you want.  I tried 3 apps in the Apple system before I found the easiest one for iPhone, but unfortunately I don’t have the other types of phones to test.  However, if my own experience holds true you may find some fun free apps that while they wont let you make an alien twin they can do other fun things with your photos, so your time is not wasted.

Step 2:

Take your photo with your phone.  Try to get your face to take up most of the frame, and not to tilt one way or other, take photos till you get one that does this.

Photographing Tara's face in the app.
Tara's face photographed straight front

Step 3:

Save the face to your phone by using the up arrow at the top of the screen.  Hitting the up key opens options for saving and/or sharing including a down arrow key button at left. Hit that button to save to your phone. The image will show a Save Success rectangle on the photo when it saves correctly.

The app showing "Save Success"

Step 4:

The face doubled by the app
The two faces merged into one
Tara's face with two left sides

NEW! Video with more detailed updated explanation:

Hit the first mirror key in the app (shown here as blue) to mirror-double the face.  Then drag the image towards the center till the sides merge into a single face.  Save the face to your phone.

Step 5:

Merging the faces in the app
Tara Face with 2 Right Sides

Click the next mirror key which will show the other side of the face.  Adjust the position of the face to look normal.  Save the image to your phone.

Step 6:

Upload your three pictures below:

Tara Face with 2 Right Sides
Tara face straight on
Tara's face with two left sides

Optional Step 7:

Play with your face and the app to do fun silly stuff to share with your friends.  (Or not.)

STAGE MAKEUP CLASS PAGES 21: “Corrective”/Straight Makeup [Assignment}

Handsome DVC Makeup Class student with beautifully contoured "Corrective" makeup.

After you have watched the videos in class or online, and done your research on “corrective” makeup, come to class and do your makeup with help from me and the Makeup TA’s.  Tara will do your photo shoot.   Tell me if you are OK with just picking them up from the general Drama 112 Stage Makeup Fall 2022  Google Photo Album, or if you prefer, I text or email them to you privately. After you get the photos, pick a few you like best and post them here for credit.  This will remind your fearless instructor to give you points!

If for some reason you can’t be in class, do the assignment at home as soon as possible and post stuff here also for credit.

Late assignments do not lose points in this class, but repeated procrastination messes up your life and often your work quality.

c. 1902-1905 Corliss, Coon & Co. Collar Catalog

This little catalog was stamped with the name of Charles Altemus, the owner of The Opera House Hat Store in Easton, Pennsylvania which he owned from around 1896 until he went bankrupt in February of 1912.

Front cover

The Opera House Hat store was a fancy haberdashery selling fine menswear especially hats. It was a thriving business as early as 1872 when it was known as Ramaley’s Opera House Hat Store, (owned and founded by Mr. Ramaley) primarily in making and selling men’s hats and fur goods. Sometime around 1896 the business passed to Mr Altemus who branched out into other men’s furnishings including collars. This catalog therefore definitively is from sometime between 1896-1912.

27 Oct 1871 Opera House Hat Store owned by “Mr. Ramaley” Fri, Oct 27, 1871 – Page 4 · The Pittsburgh Daily Commercial (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) · Newspapers.com

24 Feb 1912 Announcement of Bankruptcy Sale of The Opera House Hat Store of Charles Altemus Sat, Feb 24, 1912 – 15 · The Morning Call (Allentown, Pennsylvania) · Newspapers.com

However, the catalog may be able to date to a smaller window of time by comparing the prices and names of the collars to newspaper ads of the collars in it. Newspaper ads typically only advertise collars heavily within their first year of launch, while long popular collars stay in catalogs as long as people buy them. This 1900 newspaper clipping below has names of quite a few of the same collars as this catalog, and you can see the ad at this link:

Wed, Aug 22, 1900 – 6 · The Troy Messenger (Troy, Alabama) · Newspapers.com

Three other Ads from 1902 and 1903 have more of the collars from the catalog, as well as a similar style in the artwork, so 1903 is (so far) the more precise date I would guess this catalog is from:

24 Oct 1902 Corliss Coon Collars Nome Skibo Celtic and Telka Fri, Oct 24, 1902 – Page 3 · Highland Recorder (Monterey, Virginia) · Newspapers.com

5 Dec 1902 Corliss Coon Collars Lakewood, Oporto, Haldon, etc Fri, Dec 5, 1902 – Page 3 · Highland Recorder (Monterey, Virginia) · Newspapers.com

It also has a similar style to the side-images in the memorable Glencoe Collar as a Postcard from the Philippine Front ad in the December 1902 Pearson’s Magazine. [On a side note, I recently obtained a detachable cuff that had been used this way and sent from Oklahoma to Missouri in 1908!].

9 Jan 1903 Corliss, Coon Collars Ameer, Lisco, Casma, Laconia, Essex, Chandos Fri, Jan 9, 1903 – Page 2 · Staunton Spectator and Vindicator (Staunton, Virginia) · Newspapers.com

However there is an equally good argument for 1905 as the date, as there is an ad that mentions more of the collars from the catalog, although it is primarily pushing the “Four Ply Fold” feature rather than “New” collars:

17 Mar 1905 Corliss, Coon Collar “Basil” Ad illustrating 4 Ply Fold Fri, Mar 17, 1905 – Page 5 · St. Louis Post-Dispatch (St. Louis, Missouri) · Newspapers.com

Comparing the central “Correct Dress Chart” with similar charts in The Haberdasher, The Sartorial Art Journal, etc. would most likely give a definitive year so if anyone cares to go to the Library of Congress to check for me, I’ll be happy to alter my judgement on this if I get further info!
